Award-winning children’s author to speak at Trinity series

Celebrity children’s book author Jon Scieszka will speak at the Sweetie and Hal Clay Peck Memorial Lecture Series on October 29 at the Midland Country Club.

Scieszka will also read books, sign books, and kick off the 2022 Children’s Book Festival at 10 a.m. on October 30 at the Centennial Library. He has been writing children’s books for over 30 years and was previously a teacher in New York City, which he says has made him a better writer.

“I’m going to talk about the bigger idea I’ve always seen as a teacher first and a writer second, that children respond better to explanations than to lectures,” he said. . “If you can present these stories in a way and keep kids and adults entertained, I think that’s the most important message. “

He started the Guys Read initiative, which aims to help boys find reading interesting and equip them with role models at the elementary level. He wrote “The real story of the 3 little pigs! “,” The Frog Prince, continued “,” The Smelly Cheese Man and Other Silly Tales “,” Astronuts “and many more. Scieszka was the first National Ambassador for Children’s Literature appointed by the Librarian of Congress in 2008 and 2009. When he received the award medal, he met President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.

“I think the country owes a huge thank you to Laura Bush for launching the National Book Festival in Washington in all political fields,” he said. “It’s a way to move forward using Laura and George Bush as a role model where people don’t have to buy into everything other people believe, but find common ground. We can read different books, but we are all reading.
