Govans Community StoryWalk partners with children’s book author Todd Parr to promote kindness

Children who complete the Govans Community StoryWalk can win a free copy of “The Kindness Book” by Todd Parr. Parr will also be hosting a Zoom Q&A event on Saturday, June 25.

A new initiative from the Govans branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library encourages children to read, explore their community and practice kindness.

The branch launched its Govans Community StoryWalk on June 13 and will run until June 30.

Designed for families in the Baltimore area, the StoryWalk takes participants on a tour of the Govans neighborhood in North Central Baltimore. The tour begins at the Govans branch of Enoch Pratt and stops along the way at community centers like Illicit Rag Vintage, The Confetti Cake Bar, and the Senator Theater.

At each stop, attendees can read a panel from children’s author Todd Parr’s “The Kindness Book.” As families read, they can check off the location on a checklist provided by the library.

In addition to the checklist, families can also mark their adventure with a “Kindness Countdown.” Every day for a week, participants are encouraged to record one kind thing they did each day, either by writing or drawing a picture.

Once the Kindness Countdown is complete and all sites on the tour are checked off, attendees can return to the Govans branch to redeem their own free copy of “The Kindness Book”.

To accompany the StoryWalk, the Enoch Pratt Free Library will host a virtual Q&A for kids with Todd Parr on Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m. During his Zoom event, Parr will read stories and answer questions from the audience. To register, visit the Enoch Pratt Free Library website.

The Govans Community StoryWalk is one of many events that are part of Enoch Pratt’s Summer Break Baltimore program. Enoch Pratt’s website states that the program “is a fun, free program for all ages that encourages literacy and learning in our community throughout the summer.”

Through the Summer Break Baltimore program, participants have the opportunity to earn prizes by submitting reading logs, reporting library visits, and attending library-sponsored events like the Govans Community StoryWalk.

Prizes for children vary by age group, but include incentives such as Lego sets, Chromecast, and tickets to the Maryland Science Center and the National Aquarium.

Adults also have the opportunity to enter and win prizes. By signing up, adults have the chance to win $50 gift cards to various Baltimore City bookstores.

To participate in Enoch Pratt’s Summer Break Baltimore program, visit their website or your local branch to register.
