Spain will be the thematic country of the 2023 edition of the Kolkata Book Fair
Spain will be next year’s theme country for Kolkata International Book Fairorganizers said after the 45th edition of the 14-day event on Sunday.
Books worth Rs 20 crore were sold at the book fair, said to be the world’s biggest by attendance, until Saturday, Editors and Booksellers Guild general secretary Tridib Chatterjee told reporters.
Net sales are expected to cross the Rs 22 crore mark clinched in the previous edition two years ago before the COVID-19 outbreak, it said.
Spain’s Ambassador to India, Jose Maria Ridao Dominguez, who was there, said he was delighted with the decision to make the European country the hub nation for the 46th edition of the book fair in 2023.
âIt is with great pride that Spain has been chosen as the featured country for the 46th edition of the Calcutta International Book Fair. This will promote people-to-people contacts and facilitate the strengthening of cultural ties between India and Spain,â he said.
Chatterjee said around 16.5 lakh people visited the fair’s 600 book stalls.
âPeople were deprived of living at the book fair for about two years. After two postponements, we were finally able to organize it in the spring. The book fair will be bigger next year,â Guild President Sudhangsu Dey said.
Chatterjee said the next edition will likely be held in January 2023 but dates are yet to be set.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Minister of State for Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh, KM Khalid, were present at the inaugural ceremony of the 45th Kolkata International Book Fair, 2022 on February 28.
Organizers had given particular attention to Bangladesh this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s liberation.
The 14-day event took place at Central Park in Salt Lake near Kolkata. The book fair will officially end on Sunday at 9 p.m. with the sound of a bell in the presence of dignitaries, including ministers of state.
